How to Tell If Your Drywall Needs Repair Before Painting

E A PAINTING LLC 39

Fresh paint can do a lot for a room — but it can’t hide damaged walls. In fact, painting over drywall that hasn’t been properly repaired almost always makes the problem more visible, not less. Cracks, dents, and moisture damage become even more obvious once a coat of paint goes on and the light hits the surface at an angle.

At EA Painting LLC, inspecting and repairing drywall is a standard part of our interior painting process. If you’re planning to paint any room in your Kodak, TN home, here’s exactly what to look for before you open a single can of paint.

Cracks and Nail Pops

Cracks and nail pops are among the most common drywall issues in Tennessee homes, especially in older properties or homes that have experienced settling.

  • Hairline cracks along seams or corners are common and usually a cosmetic fix — fill with joint compound and sand smooth
  • Larger or recurring cracks may indicate foundation settling or structural movement and should be evaluated before painting
  • Stair-step cracks running diagonally along drywall seams are a common sign of foundation movement
  • Nail pops appear as small circular bumps where drywall screws or nails have pushed through the surface — drive a new screw nearby, dimple the old nail back in, and fill with compound
  • Any crack wider than 1/8 inch deserves a closer look before simply patching and painting over it
Dents, Holes, and Impact Damage

Normal wear and tear leaves its mark on walls over time — especially in hallways, kids’ rooms, and high-traffic areas.

  • Small dents from furniture or doorknobs can be filled with lightweight spackle and sanded flat
  • Holes from picture hooks, anchors, or screws need to be filled completely before painting — paint alone won’t cover them
  • Medium holes (up to 6 inches) can typically be patched with a drywall patch kit and joint compound
  • Large holes require a proper drywall patch cut to fit — simply covering with tape and compound won’t hold long-term
  • Check behind doors for impact damage from door handles, a very common spot that gets overlooked during prep
Water Stains and Moisture Damage

Water damage is one of the most important issues to identify and address before painting — and one of the easiest to miss if you’re not looking carefully.

  • Yellow, brown, or rust-colored stains on ceilings or walls are a clear sign of past or active water intrusion
  • Soft, spongy, or crumbling drywall means moisture has compromised the material and it needs to be replaced — not just patched
  • Bubbling or peeling paint on a wall often signals moisture trapped behind the surface
  • Mold or mildew spots must be treated with an antimicrobial solution before any repair or painting takes place
  • Always identify and fix the source of the water before repairing the drywall — otherwise the damage will return
Uneven Surfaces and Poor Tape Joints

Sometimes drywall isn’t damaged — it’s just uneven or poorly finished, which becomes very obvious once paint goes on.

  • Visible tape seams or ridges along drywall joints mean the original finish work wasn’t properly feathered
  • Bumpy or uneven sections may need skim coating — a thin layer of joint compound spread across the surface and sanded smooth
  • Corner bead damage (dented or crooked metal or plastic corner trim) needs to be repaired or replaced before painting
  • Texture inconsistencies — areas that look different from the surrounding wall — will stand out even more once painted
